DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY AND BIOCHEMISTRY
POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
 ASSISTANT PROFESSOR

Position:

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Northern Iowa is seeking to fill a tenure-track appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor. The department will consider candidates with research and teaching interests in analytical, biochemistry, organic, physical, and/or inorganic chemistry. Preference will be given to candidates with research interests that are cross-disciplinary; for example, nano-chemistry, green chemistry, polymer chemistry or bio-analytical. Qualifications:    Required qualifications include a Ph.D. in Chemistry or Biochemistry, demonstrated commitment to excellence as a classroom teacher, demonstrated written and oral communication skills, commitment to developing an active research program involving both undergraduate and graduate students (MS) and a willingness to seek outside funding. The individual must be able to teach advanced classes in their sub-discipline and contribute to the department’s teaching commitments in the University’s Liberal Arts Core curriculum in science. Post-doctoral experience is preferred but not required.  Pre-employment background checks are required

Department:

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry currently has fourteen full time faculty members, two laboratory specialists, a departmental secretary and an electronics technician. The faculty specializations include analytical chemistry, biochemistry, chemical education, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, physical chemistry and environmental chemistry. The emphasis of the department is on both teaching and research at the undergraduate and graduate level (MS). The department offers an MS degree in Chemistry, a Professional Science Masters (PSM) degree in Applied Chemistry and Biochemistry, and an MA degree in Science Teaching. The department also contributes to graduate programs in environmental science and science education. The department has approximately 110 chemistry and biochemistry majors and offers ACS-certified BS degrees in both chemistry and biochemistry, as well as BA degrees with emphases in chemistry, biochemistry, chemistry teaching, and chemistry marketing. The department graduates more undergraduate majors in chemistry than any other institution within the state. The chemistry department has excellent physical facilities for both teaching and research. The instrumentation in the department includes various spectrometers (IR, UV, near IR, Raman, 400 MHz multinuclear NMR, LC-MS and GC -MS), gas chromatographs, HPLC, TGA, DSC, AFM, STM, SEM, scintillation counter, ultracentrifuge, and electrophoresis. The department also has excellent computational facilities which are supported by the college.
